Java, or Rust, or Go ? I have been watching the world of programming languages for over 35 years now, from the perspective of business, learning, training, building apps, AI, etc When I see the people in the industry with 5-10-15-20 years strongly recommend, on their YouTube channels, I always feel sad for the students, freshers, self-learnt professionals. Why ? The answer and future is actually in the 40 years feet level, and not the 40 month visibility. Let’s analyse this: Rust is moving to make memory management less strict to accommodate people who want to build applications that don’t run massively multithreaded. Go is moving towards accommodating more Generics and other such constructs to accommodate better concept and compilation matching with Rust features, and the core compilation targets. LLVM is universal. No one needs to invent anything else. Java started with a very concept heavy language betting the house on OOP. Now pivoting to functional or data oriented concepts. More importantly, if you look at recent high impact changes arriving in the next 2-4 releases, they are designed to allow better compilation to binaries and memory usage optimisation. There is also phenomenal progress on Graal to take Java to native. In the next 12-24 months, all these will be memory efficient, compilable platforms. Java will have the option of the JVM, others will not. Rust will have the option of massive multithreading protection. And Go will be focusing on fast, quick and small. So, is there a right answer? Will any of these go away ? Will AI result in ‘programming language does not matter’ ? Anyone who says they have an answer or directional definitiveness, they are not the right advisor. So use the right tool for the job ? Who tells you which one is ? Confused ? There is a right answer for everyone. But no single right answer. Let’s talk.
