Should content from GenAI be deemed open source ?
The training for all the models is happening on content people wrote in the open - blogs, StackOverflow answers, Github repos, Open books, Court proceedings, fiction, news letters, podcasts, free images, personal photos on the cloud, etc
And the models are charging the same users who helped create that content.
The content was, in spirit, free for all. And that has always meant that more people contribute, and make the content availability better. That is the reason search was always free (except for the advertisement).
The content needs to be free. That is the essence of the internet.
It’s important to consider how this relates to the sentiments of the people writing this content. I feel that a lot of content creators will now want to go closed source, to protect against future losses.
But, with the GenAI ‘revolution’, I am now thinking if I want to be the product, and also pay to be that. The reverse of what has been keeping the internet growing.
Is the downward spiral of the open internet starting ? Will we go back to a time when information was not easily accessible foe those that could not afford to pay ?
Wondering.
