Do you DM the CEO for a entry level job ?

Over the last year, my “designation” on LinkedIn has reflected “Head of Engineering”.

During this time, I have been approached by many individuals, currently struggling to find a “job”. These people first send a “Connect” request, which I am happy to accept, like with all the leaders who are open to networking.

Along with this, then comes a Direct Message ( also called DM, or Instant Message ), asking for a “role” or a “job” in the company.

I want to use this post to advice these people to save their energy, and also not get marked as spam. The “Head” or “CxO” or similar, is, normally, not the owner of the company. So they cannot “give” or “offer” you a job, without going through the Recruiter/HR of the company. Unless there is only one person in the company.

The right thing to do, in these situations, is to look for the “recruiter” or “HR” of the company they work for, and approach them. Those people have more influence and reach than even they give themselves. They have the insight in the business to propose new positions if an “appropriate” profile shows up. They can “pre-empt” future plans and propose bringing them earlier.

The other people in the company are just “messengers” at best. If they promise you a “job” or “position”, please know that something is fishy.

Why would you want to connect with other people from the same company ? They may post openings, or other opportunities (internships, etc), and you can look for those. In a few years, these same people may be influencers / decision makers, and you may benefit from their messages / advise / posts.

If you spam people senior enough, you will get ignored, or worse, blocked. Which will then put you in a difficult position in the LinkedIn algorithms.
