Role of Independent Directors, or Strategy Consultants

For Leadership, at a Company or Department, or wherever the business responsibility lies, it is important to focus on the business, and its growth. This means that they are very tactical in decision making. More often than not, the strategy is also built on the knowledge that comes from handling the specific domain.

Most often, the disruption, and exponential benefits, come from “Out of the box” thinking. This is easier said than done. Because, it requires overlaying multiple domains, skills from multiple business areas, and perspectives built from exposure to ideas that are different from the ones that a person in the same stream of work would have.

This requires an “independent” view. This is where an “Independent Director” on the board, or a “Strategy Consultant” comes into their best. These are people who specialise in building perspectives. Who thrive on collecting data points that help identify long term trends. Who spend enough time with execution teams to know the strategies to “upgrade while keeping the engine running”.

These are people who would spend 1 min to tell you what to do, and would have spent years learning about it. Leverage their experience.
