Fractional or Full time CTO ?
Every organisation has a life cycle. And, at various points, the benefits from “external knowledge” and the “internal experience” will vary.
Tech moves very quickly. It is normally difficult for a single CTO to be tactical for the product and strategic from a technology perspective, at the same time. Very few can manage to “pause” periodically, and get the larger picture. It is also important to get a balance between “moving too fast” and “moving too slow”.
A #FractionalCTO brings knowledge from the loads of other problems they have solved and seen. This is useful when an organisation is small, and hence cannot afford a full time CTO.
Larger / more established organisations can benefit by hiring one so that their full time CTO has a bouncing board, just to get a second opinion.
Most technical leaders, irrespective of the organisation, should be able to play the fractional role, for some organisation, at an appropriate size. If not, then they are seriously impacting their learning ability.
If you are an organisation that has only one “Senior” Tech Leader, please get them some help. Hire a Fractional CTO for them.
