Tech skills for freshers

Tech skills for freshers

As we look at technology evolving, we see that society as a whole is still stuck in the past. Our ‘evaluation’ methodologies are from an era where memory retention, and retrievable of text was important.

That is no longer the case. With the advent of the internet, everything is so different. More importantly, the abundance of knowledge content has changed the importance of ‘formal’ education, from giving ‘training’ to creating trainable individuals.

Once the industry, the interviewers, the recruiting managers and the academic institutions accept that, they will no longer ask questions in the interview connected to tree or hashmap algorithms. They will instead :

  • how do you retain knowledge ?
  • how do you incrementally enhance your ability to be able to retrieve it when needed ?
  • are you a missionary or a resident ?

These can give so much about the person, that the ‘algorithm’ questions cannot.

Some are great at ‘rote learning’ while others figure the algorithms themselves. And it shows in their style of studying.

Missionaries want no commitments, just adventure. Residents are invested for life.

Building a ‘retrieval’ system will be critical for someone who is a fast learner. Others will refer to ‘written notes’.

No one here is vetter or worse than the other. Every job needs different skills, and capabilities.

Do not bully the youngsters into believing that by cracking a few problem solving sites they can become professional techies.
