75th year of Independence of India - An Employee’s perspective
‘Independence’ for me is the freedom to decide when i can work, continuously changing priorities between health, life and work, as it happens, because these are not constants.
It also stands for being able to choose the type of work I want to focus on. And the organisation helping me build my skills in that direction. Also, to allow me to change my areas of focus as i grow, mature, and learn, because learning is a continuous process.
‘Independence’, by definition, stands for the ability to to take decisions. Along with the rights, comes the responsibility to own that area. My workplace should give me the space to own and take decisions, and responsibility, based on my abilities and capabilities.
My workplace should continuously challenge me, and mentor me, to handle situations I have never handled before. This allows me to grow on multiple dimensions. Gives me a new perspective. Eventually, my perspective, will become unique enough.
In the broader context, it stands for inclusivity, diversity, equal respect for everyone and every role in the organisation. An intern, still at college, should be able to suggest, and hold the CTO accountable, on decisions made on the product, withput any hesitation.
My workplace should feel like home, because in terms of clock time, we probably spend more waking hours thinking about work than about our family at home. Colleagues should be able to see each other as relationships - Friend, Sibling, Guardian, BFF, any other - whatever.
I should be able to trust every person in the organisation without having to think about ‘organisation politics’ or ‘is this a stupid question’ or ‘i don’t understand tech, and i cant login to my email, am I doing something wrong ?’. Or for that matter, ‘i have asked this a billion times but still cant retain it. Can someone help me one more time ?’.
Last, but not the least, my workplace should give me the flexibility to explore other interests on the side, as gigs, hobbies, or even ventures. Because entrepreneurs are great at critical decision making. And they understand the value of trust that the ‘primary workplace’ is giving them.
